Why am I Shedding?

Shedding can be very unsettling when you've started a topical treatment for hair regrowth. But it is actually a good sign that your follicles are responding to treatment.

First, lets understand the hair growth cycle.

Hair growth begins under the skin in structures called follicles. Each strand of hair normally grows for 2 to 6 years, goes into a resting phase for several months, and then falls out. The cycle starts over when the follicle begins growing a new hair. Increased levels of androgens in hair follicles can lead to a shorter cycle of hair growth and the growth of shorter and thinner strands of hair. Additionally, there is a delay in the growth of new hair to replace strands that are shed.

According to the Mayo clinic:

“People typically lose about 100 hairs a day. This usually doesn't cause noticeable thinning of scalp hair because new hair is growing in at the same time. Hair loss occurs when this cycle of hair growth and shedding is disrupted...”

To understand more about how DHT and hormonal fluctuations affect this cycle of hair growth, click here.

Have you switched from minoxidil to HAIRMETTO?

Minoxidil works as a vasodilator, widening the blood vessels and extending the growth cycle of a hair. HAIRMETTO Oil works not only to block DHT, but also acts to prevent the enzyme 5-ar from converting excess testosterone into DHT in the first place. HAIRMETTO Serum works to stimulate circulation, soothe scalp inflammation and to block DHT.

So perhaps now for the first time you are using a product that blocks DHT. This may cause a disruption in the cycle of hair growth in some individuals but it also means hair is responding to the treatment.

Notice what the Mayo clinic mentions about those who start Minoxidil for the first time:

“At first it may cause you to shed hair. New hair may be shorter and thinner than previous hair. At least six months of treatment is required to prevent further hair loss and to start hair regrowth. You need to keep applying the medication to retain benefits.”

It stands to reason that whether you are starting minoxidil or another treatment such as HAIRMETTO, that for the first time blocks DHT in your scalp, there will be a disruption in your normal hair growth pattern. It would be more that the normal 100 hairs per day.

As in cases of male/female pattern baldness, DHT has restricted the root and slowly caused it to become weak and brittle, eventually falling away.

Once the root is nourished back to health, it is ready to grow a healthy hair. The scalp will dispose of the weak, brittle hair. This can be unsettling. However, shedding in this way is a good sign as your scalp is healthier and the DHT is losing its grip.
